Burger Bun (take care not to burn it)

Monday, April 19, 2010

Ingredients:

1 3/4 cups plain flour (A)
1 packet instant yeast
2 tbs castor sugar
1 cup milk (warm)
1/2 cup plain water (warm)
1/4 cup butter/margarine
1 1/2 tsp fine salt
1 egg (slightly beaten)
2 3/4 cups plain flour (B)

Making it:

Stage 1
1. Mix: plain flour (A), yeast, sugar in a bowl. Mix well.
2. Mix: milk, plain water, butter and salt in another bowl. Mix until butter melts. Pour into the above flour mix.
3. Mix in egg. Continue mixing very well.
4. Insert flour (B) in batches of 1/2 cup while stirring until we get a dough that doesn't stick to side of bowl.
5. Start kneading the dough until it gets soft and elastic. Yeah, elastic.
6. Put the dough in a greased bowl. Cover with plastic/cloth. Leave until it rises to double the size.

Stage 2
1. Once it has risen, tap the air out and knead again. Leave to it to rest for 10 minutes.

Stage 3
1. Bring the dough out and divide it into 12 pieces. (Or whatever size u think suits)
2. Shape them into balls/buns. Arrange on baking tray, leaving space for them to rise.
3. Cover with plastic/cloth. Leave until they rise to double the size.

Stage 4
1. Glaze the bread with an egg-and-water mixture.
2. Bake for 20-25 minutes at 200 degrees C.
3. The finished bread should be soft even when cooled. Nice both with sweet and savoury stuff.

*The shown picture is a slightly burnt roti. A failed example. Do not do that at home.
